Egypt Drives Digital Strategy to Become Regional Telecommunications Hub

CAIRO, Egypt (BG) – Egypt is stepping up efforts to position itself as a regional hub for communications and digital services by implementing its Digital Strategy, which focuses on developing the outsourcing industry and encouraging global companies to expand their operations in the North African country.

In a statement on Monday, the presidency announced that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Amr Talaat to discuss the country’s digital strategy.

President El-Sisi was briefed on ongoing initiatives under the digital strategy to improve internet and communication services while encouraging investment in the communications and IT sectors.

The president stressed the importance of improving Egypt’s position in global telecommunications indicators to consolidate the country’s role as a regional leader in the industry.

“The president directed to intensify efforts to improve Egypt’s standing in global telecommunications indicators to solidify Egypt’s role as a regional hub for communications, digital services, and information technology,” the statement read.

Advancing AI and Digital Transformation.

The meeting also highlighted progress towards the launch of the second edition of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

The initiative aims to leverage AI technologies to address societal challenges, enhance digital infrastructure across various sectors, and support Egypt’s economic development goals.

Other focus areas included cooperation between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and other government entities, the expansion of digital transformation projects, and initiatives to localise mobile phone manufacturing.

President El-Sisi stressed the importance of transforming Egypt into an integrated digital society through initiatives such as Applied Technology Schools and Digital Egypt Innovation Centres, which aim to equip youth with essential digital skills and job opportunities.

Focus on Cybersecurity and Data Protection

The president also stressed the need to strengthen cybersecurity and data protection programmes.

He called for attracting specialised international centres for research and development in Egypt’s communications and IT sectors, further enhancing the country’s attractiveness as an investment destination.

With these initiatives, Egypt is steadily advancing its digital transformation agenda and is poised to become a key player in the global outsourcing industry and digital economy.
