The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) has paid tribute to Dr. Soumana Sako, its former Executive Secretary and a renowned Malian economist and statesman, following news of his death at age 75.
Dr. Sako, often referred to by his nickname “Zorro,” passed away after decades of public service dedicated to Mali and the African continent.
His death has plunged his home country into mourning and revived memories of a career marked by discipline, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to development and good governance.
In Mali, Dr. Sako rose to national prominence in 1986 when he was appointed Minister of Finance under President Moussa Traoré.
Facing a difficult economic climate, he was widely respected for his strict fiscal discipline, transparent management of public resources, and efforts to rebuild confidence with international partners.
The ACBF, based in Harare, remembered Dr. Sako as a visionary leader who advanced capacity building across Africa.
As Executive Secretary, he played a pivotal role in strengthening the Foundation’s mission to equip African countries with the skills, institutions, and policy frameworks needed to achieve their development goals.
“He will be remembered as a man of integrity, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Africa’s self-reliant development,” said Mamadou Biteye, current Executive Secretary of the Foundation. “His vision of a strong, resilient, and confident Africa continues to inspire.”
The Foundation extended its condolences to Dr. Sako’s family, friends, and former colleagues, saying his legacy would continue to guide Africa’s future leaders.
