FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (BG) – Sierra Leonean President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has received two prestigious continental awards for his leadership in gender equality and girls’ education.

The African HeForShe Champion of the Year 2024 and the Presidential African Intelligence Award 2024 were presented by former Malawian President Dr. Joyce Banda on Saturday.

She praised Bio for championing women’s rights, noting that while Africa has six female presidents, few male leaders actively promote gender equality.

Banda also commended First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio for her advocacy, emphasizing that Bio’s commitment is reflected in policy actions, not just words.

In his acceptance speech, President Bio expressed his gratitude, calling the awards a recognition of his government’s work in women’s empowerment and education, especially in STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

“These awards are not just personal achievements but a testament to the collective efforts of my government and the people of Sierra Leone in fostering education, gender equality, and women’s empowerment,” Bio said.

He highlighted key initiatives, including legislative reforms for gender mainstreaming, increased access to education for girls, support for women entrepreneurs, and stronger measures against gender-based violence.

Bio affirmed that gender equality is a shared responsibility.

“I dedicate this award to every girl who dares to dream, every woman who strives against all odds, and every man who actively works for gender equality,” he added.
