Tanzania Mourns the Loss of Accomplished Public Health Leader

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (BG) – Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the newly elected Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region, passed away on Wednesday while receiving medical treatment in India, Tanzania authorities announced. He was 55.

The announcement of his death was made by Tanzania’s Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Tulia Ackson, who expressed sorrow at the loss. “I received the sad news of Dr. Ndugulile’s passing with great sorrow. His death is a loss not only to the people of Kigamboni but to all Tanzanians. May the Almighty rest his soul in peace,” she said, as reported by local media outlet The Citizen.

Dr. Ndugulile, a Member of Parliament representing Kigamboni, one of five districts of the Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania, was a respected medical professional, public health specialist, and politician with over 20 years of experience in public service.

The news of Dr. Ndugulile’s death shocked global health leaders, including WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and WHO Africa Regional Director Dr. Matshidiso Moeti.

“I’m deeply saddened and shocked about the sudden passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, WHO Africa Regional Director-elect. It’s an immense loss. My entire team and I send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, the government, and the people of Tanzania,” Dr. Moeti tweeted.

Dr. Tedros also offered his condolences, tweeting, “Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and the parliament and people of Tanzania.”

President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania also expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and the nation, calling Dr. Ndugulile’s death a significant loss.

A Remarkable Career

Dr. Ndugulile’s career was distinguished by his contributions as Deputy Minister of Health, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, and a technocrat in Tanzania’s Ministry of Health.

He was deeply committed to improving health systems, addressing emerging health threats, and fostering health equity.

Dr. Ndugulile envisioned leading a transformative agenda that prioritized the health and well-being of all individuals.

His mission was collaborating with governments, stakeholders, and communities to implement sustainable health policies and interventions tailored to Africa’s unique challenges.
