The African diaspora represents a bridge of culture, enterprise and shared destiny, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados told participants Friday at the Intra-African Trade Fair in Algiers, Algeria.

Speaking on the second day of the weeklong trade gathering, Mottley called for concrete action to strengthen ties between Africa and its diaspora, warning against what she described as empty rhetoric.

“We must move from rhetoric to building the institutional frameworks that create opportunities for trade, investment, cultural exchange and connectivity,” Mottley said.

Her remarks came as the trade fair marked Global Africa Diaspora Day, an occasion described as a call to deepen economic and cultural bonds between Africans on the continent and communities abroad.

Mottley urged Africans and their descendants to transform centuries of division into a unity of purpose.

She drew parallels with other global communities that have turned their diversity into political and economic strength.

“The fragments we reassemble are stronger than the vessel that once took its symmetry for granted,” she said.

Global Africa Diaspora Day represents a demand for sustained frameworks that link heritage to opportunity and build prosperity through connection.

The day was intended to highlight the diaspora’s role in investment, entrepreneurship and cultural exchange, while also pressing governments and institutions to create policies that make such cooperation easier.
