Nigeria has launched its National Digital Postcode System, a new address identification framework that assigns precise codes to locations nationwide and improves access to delivery, emergency, and government services.
Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, announced the rollout Thursday, describing the system as “a significant step toward a Nigeria where your location connects you to more possibilities.”
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.
The system, developed with the Nigerian Postal Service, is intended to help residents, businesses and public agencies identify locations more accurately. Tijani said Nigerians can obtain their postcode through postcode.gov.ng and encouraged the public to begin using and sharing their codes.
He said the initiative could support small businesses seeking to deliver beyond their neighborhoods, families waiting for emergency assistance and communities that government agencies need to reach with essential services.
“An accurate postcode can make a meaningful difference in each of these lives,” Tijani said.
The launch comes as the government works to expand digital infrastructure and support economic growth.
Tijani linked the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s stated ambition of building a $1 trillion economy, saying reliable location data is one of the foundations needed to help more Nigerians “participate, trade and prosper.”
The minister also asked Nigerians to provide feedback on the system, including whether finding a postcode was easy, whether they had started sharing and using it and what they would like the system to make possible for their businesses or communities.
“Let’s put our communities on the map and bring opportunity closer to every Nigerian,” he said.
