ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (BG) — Ethiopia has officially launched its first electronic passport (E-passport) in a landmark event held at the Science Museum in the capital Addis Ababa on Friday.

The initiative, spearheaded by Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS), Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH), and Toppan Security Ethiopia S.C., represents a major step forward in modernizing the country’s travel documentation system.

The E-passport launch ceremony, attended by H.E. President Taye Atske Selassie, featured the presentation of the first copies of the new passport to Ethiopia’s leadership, EIH said in a statement.

Senior government officials, diplomats, and international partners gathered to celebrate this milestone in national security, digital transformation, and service efficiency.

The new E-passport integrates biometric technology, advanced encryption, and tamper-proof materials, ensuring compliance with international standards and significantly enhancing security.

Alongside the passport, ICS has deployed modernized passport issuance systems to streamline application processes and improve service delivery for Ethiopian citizens.

Selamawit Dawit, CEO of Immigration and Citizenship Services, highlighted the impact on immigration and national security.

“With improved security, faster processing, and internationally recognized standards, this passport will significantly enhance the travel experience for Ethiopians while strengthening our global recognition and border control,” Selamawit said.

This milestone marks a significant step forward in modernizing Ethiopia’s immigration infrastructure, strengthening national security, and ensuring a more seamless, efficient, and secure experience for travelers.

Dr. Brook Taye, CEO of Ethiopian Investment Holdings, emphasized the strategic importance of the project. “The launch of Ethiopia’s first E-passport is a testament to our commitment to advancing strategic national projects that drive modernization and efficiency.”
