Algeria has secured $878.09 million in financing for the second phase of the 495-kilometer Laghouat–Ghardaïa–El Meniaa railway line, a major infrastructure project designed to improve transport connectivity and strengthen the Trans-Saharan railway corridor linking Algiers with Tamanrasset.
The funding will support construction of the 230-kilometer Ghardaïa–El Meniaa section, along with integrated infrastructure and institutional support activities. The project will be implemented by Algeria’s Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure.
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) approved the financing in July, saying the investment will help improve transport competitiveness, enhance territorial connectivity and accelerate regional integration while supporting Algeria’s broader economic development goals.
“Through this financing, the African Development Bank is supporting Algeria in delivering strategic railway infrastructure that will drive economic transformation, territorial connectivity and regional integration,” said Mike Salawou, director for infrastructure and urban development at the AfDB.
According to the bank, the railway will help expand agricultural and mining production in the provinces, or wilayas, along the corridor by reducing transport costs and travel times. It is also expected to stimulate activity in agro-industry, logistics, construction and public works by bringing production centers closer to markets.
The project includes local development initiatives, including targeted training for young people and women in railway-related occupations, logistics, tourism and handicrafts.
“This project reflects Algeria’s policy of economic diversification beyond hydrocarbons by connecting its people, mines and ports to optimize the use of its resources and generate wealth. It is also a major asset for regional integration, reinforcing Algeria’s position as a gateway between Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe,” said Abdoulkader Dileita, the African Development Bank’s country manager for Algeria.
