Souleymane Cissé, le père du cinéma africain, est mort

BAMAKO, Mali (BG) – Le réalisateur malien Souleymane Cissé, figure emblématique du cinéma africain, est décédé mercredi 19 février à l’âge de 84 ans à Bamako, a-t-on appris de sources proches de sa famille.

Considéré comme un pionnier du septième art sur le continent, Cissé s’était imposé sur la scène internationale avec Yeelen (1987), qui lui valut le Prix du Jury au Festival de Cannes.

Son œuvre, marquée par une approche singulière des récits africains et une esthétique maîtrisée, a influencé plusieurs générations de cinéastes.

Le président sortant de la Commission de l’Union africaine, Moussa Faki Mahamat, a salué « un grand visionnaire de notre patrimoine culturel cinématographique », rappelant que Yeelen avait contribué à remodeler le cinéma mondial.

Né à Bamako en 1940, Cissé avait étudié au prestigieux Institut de Cinématographie de Moscou. Il s’était d’abord fait remarquer avec Baara (1978) et Finye (1982), avant d’atteindre la consécration avec Yeelen.

Récompensé du Carrosse d’Or en 2023 à Cannes pour l’ensemble de son œuvre, il devait présider le jury des longs métrages du Festival panafricain du cinéma et de la télévision de Ouagadougou (FESPACO), qui s’ouvre vendredi.

Sa disparition survient alors que le Mali et l’Afrique pleurent l’un des derniers grands maîtres du cinéma du continent.
