South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has extended formal congratulations to the Kingdom of Morocco for its hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, taking place from Dec. 21, 2025, to Jan. 18, 2026, has been widely praised for its high standards by officials, teams and fans.
South Africa was eliminated in the round of 16 by Cameroon on Sunday.
In a letter addressed to Morocco’s Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports on Tuesday, McKenzie praised the country’s hosting of the ongoing tournament, highlighting the quality of infrastructure, logistics and overall professionalism.
“The atmosphere across host cities has set a new benchmark for our continent,” McKenzie wrote.
He commended Morocco’s stadiums in cities such as Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech, noting their modern design, accessibility and technical standards.
He also emphasized the “consistent and true playing surfaces” that have allowed African football to shine.
McKenzie lauded Morocco’s hospitality, stating that delegations, officials, media and supporters had been met with warmth and generosity.
He cited the professionalism of volunteers and organizers in creating a vibrant environment, and said the passion of Moroccan fans was “inspiring for all of us who care so deeply about African football.”
Calling the tournament a “powerful demonstration” of Morocco’s readiness to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, McKenzie said the success of AFCON sends a clear message that Africa is capable of staging global sporting events at the highest level.
The letter concluded with a message of partnership and support for continued collaboration between South Africa and Morocco in advancing sport and development across the continent.
