The Government of Ghana has renewed its partnership with international charity Mercy Ships, with plans for the hospital ship Global Mercy to dock at the Port of Tema in August 2026.

During its stay, the ship will provide free specialized surgeries and medical training, contributing to Ghana’s goals for improving surgical care nationwide.

This will mark the fifth time Mercy Ships has visited Ghana since 1991.

Previous collaborations have resulted in more than 2,600 surgeries, over 16,000 dental procedures, and training for nearly 140 healthcare professionals.

The renewed agreement was confirmed after a meeting between President John Dramani Mahama and members of the Mercy Ships Board.

President Mahama emphasized the importance of health in national development, stating that access to care is fundamental to freedom and dignity.

Patients from across Ghana will be eligible for surgical procedures including tumor removal, cleft lip and palate repair, pediatric orthopedic surgery, cataract operations, plastic reconstruction, and obstetric fistula repair.

A national registration process will begin ahead of the ship’s arrival to identify and schedule patients.

Mercy Ships Board Chair and Interim CEO Gary Brown expressed enthusiasm about returning to Ghana, noting the organization’s commitment to long-term collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other partners.

In addition to surgical care, Mercy Ships will continue to support Ghana’s National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan.
