Nigeria’s Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu launched the €410 million Omi Eko Project on Saturday, at the Five Cowries Terminal in Ikoyi.

The initiative will deploy over 70 hybrid electric ferries, dredge 140 kilometers of waterways, and build 25 modern terminals to promote clean and sustainable urban transport.

The project, backed by the European Union and French development agencies, integrates waterways with existing rail and bus systems to ease traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions.

It aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewable energy goals and supports the broader Abidjan-Lagos Corridor development.

Designed to serve millions by 2030, the Omi Eko Project is expected to boost economic activity and improve mobility in Africa’s most populous city.

While many Nigerians praised the governor’s leadership online, others called for improved electricity and clean water access alongside transport upgrades.
