Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has canceled fuel allowances and allocations for all political appointees as part of cost-cutting measures to reduce government spending.

The directive took effect immediately and extends broader austerity efforts to redirect public resources toward priority areas, officials announced Tuesday.

Mahama previously reduced the number of ministers and presidential staff to streamline government operations.

“The president believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, presidential spokesperson.

The administration also terminated satellite television subscriptions in government offices, including the presidency.

Officials described the initiatives as necessary steps to ensure fiscal responsibility and efficient use of public funds.

The measures come as Ghana continues efforts to stabilize its economy and manage public debt.

The fuel allowance cancellation affects appointees across government ministries and agencies who previously received either direct fuel allocations or monetary allowances for transportation costs.
