Kenya is celebrating a landmark achievement at the 2025 New York City Marathon after its athletes swept the podium in both the men’s and women’s elite races, reaffirming the nation’s enduring dominance in distance running.

President William Ruto congratulated the athletes for their exceptional victories, calling the double sweep a “historic triumph” and a testament to “the strength, discipline, and spirit of excellence that define our great nation.”

Hellen Obiri led the charge in the women’s race, defending her title with a course record of 2:21:38. She was followed by compatriots Sharon Lokedi and Sheila Chepkirui, who secured second and third place respectively, completing an all-Kenyan podium.

“Congratulations Hellen Obiri for delivering a remarkable win with a course record ahead of Sharon Lokedi and Sheila Chepkirui,” Ruto said. “Your teamwork and endurance reaffirm Kenya’s proud tradition of producing world-class champions.”

In the men’s race, Benson Kipruto edged teammate Alexander Mutiso in a dramatic photo finish, both clocking 2:10:53. Albert Korir completed the sweep by finishing third. It marked the first time in history that Kenya claimed all six podium spots in both elite divisions of the New York City Marathon.

“Well done Benson Kipruto for claiming victory in a photo finish,” the president said. “Together, you showcased the Kenyan talent and the unyielding determination that define our athletes.”

According to World Athletics, Obiri’s back-to-back victories place her among an elite group of women to win consecutive New York titles. Her win was also the third-fastest in the event’s history. Kipruto, who previously won in Chicago and Boston, now adds New York to his major marathon titles.

“We salute you, champions, for flying the Kenyan flag high and bringing immense pride to our nation,” Ruto added. “Your success reminds us that with hard work, unity, and belief in our potential, Kenya will always rise to greatness.”
