Country Eyes Oil Production by 2029 While Advancing Renewable Energy Development
WINDHOEK, Namibia (BG) – Namibia is positioning itself as a key energy hub for sub-Saharan Africa, driven by significant oil discoveries in the Orange Basin, a commitment to renewable energy, and policies aimed at fostering economic growth and environmental responsibility.
During African Energy Week 2024, industry leaders and government officials highlighted Namibia’s energy potential, including over 11 billion barrels of oil reserves discovered in the Orange Basin since 2022, according to a media release by the Namibia International Energy Conference (NIEC) on Tuesday.
Tom Alweendo, Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, stressed the importance of creating an investor-friendly framework. “Namibia is working closely with energy companies to fast-track delivery and calls on all stakeholders to build an African energy sector that is not only economically robust but environmentally responsible,” Alweendo was quoted as saying.
Ongoing Drilling and Production Plans
Appraisal drilling by TotalEnergies, Shell, and Galp Energia is ongoing, with the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) planning to drill three additional oil and gas wells by early 2025. Petroleum Commissioner Maggie Shino noted that while the first oil production is tentatively scheduled for 2029, “This could be sooner.”
Local Content and Regional Partnerships
Local content is at the heart of Namibia’s energy strategy. Selma Shimutwikeni, CEO of RichAfrica Consultancy, emphasized the importance of ensuring that energy development benefits the broader region. “Local content is key to unlocking the industry’s potential and ensuring shared growth and prosperity,” she said.
Namibia’s efforts align with its goal of becoming a regional energy leader within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Renewable Energy Potential
Namibia recently launched a report showcasing its potential for renewable energy development, particularly in solar and wind power. These resources could transform the nation’s power sector, strengthen energy security, and support sustainable development.
The upcoming 7th Namibia International Energy Conference (NIEC), scheduled for April 2025, will focus on translating Namibia’s energy vision into actionable steps.
