Uganda Airlines has signed a commitment with Boeing to acquire eight new passenger aircraft and two converted freighters, a move the national carrier says will strengthen its fleet, expand connectivity and support the country’s economic development goals.
The announcement was made on Wednesday following a signing ceremony at State House attended by President Yoweri Museveni, government officials, U.S. Embassy representatives, Uganda Airlines board members and Boeing executives.
Under the agreement, Uganda Airlines plans to add eight passenger aircraft to its fleet and purchase two cargo aircraft, a Boeing 767 widebody converted freighter and a Boeing 737 Boeing Converted Freighter.
The airline said the acquisition will increase its capacity to serve regional, continental and international markets while supporting trade, tourism, investment and cargo transportation.
Uganda Airlines said the fleet expansion aligns with Uganda Vision 2040 and the government’s ambition to attain sustainable middle-income status.
The carrier said improved air connectivity would also support growth in key sectors, including agriculture, tourism, minerals, and services, by providing greater access to international markets.
“This is a strategic investment in Uganda’s future and a major step towards establishing Uganda as a leading aviation hub in the region,” the airline said in a statement.
The carrier expressed appreciation to the government, aviation authorities, Boeing and its management and negotiation teams for supporting the initiative.
Uganda Airlines also described the agreement as the start of a long-term partnership with Boeing.
During the ceremony, Boeing Vice President of Sales Anbessie Yitbarek pledged support for the airline’s growth plans through technical expertise, training and capacity-building initiatives.
The planned expansion marks one of the most significant fleet growth announcements by Uganda Airlines since its revival and is expected to enhance the carrier’s ability to compete on regional and international routes and to expand cargo operations.
