Namibia’s President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has dismissed Deputy Prime Minister Natangwe Ithete from his cabinet roles and will personally assume leadership of the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, one of the country’s most strategic economic portfolios.

The presidency announced Ithete’s dismissal on Sunday, citing Article 32(6) of the Constitution, which allows the president to act on executive matters.

While no official reason was provided, the abrupt move comes amid growing scrutiny of the ministry’s management and speculation over unconfirmed allegations involving oil deals.

On Monday, the president met with the ministry’s staff in Windhoek to reassure them of continuity in operations.

Addressing the team, she emphasized the ministry’s pivotal role in Namibia’s industrial and energy transformation, especially as the country ramps up investment in green hydrogen, critical minerals, and oil exploration.

“Take pride in what you do and do it with urgency, discipline and integrity,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah told staff. “Remain committed and serve your nation with integrity.”

This marks her first major reshuffle since taking office as Namibia’s first female president in 2025.

Her decision to take over the ministry underscores its economic importance and her intent to reinforce accountability.

Ithete remains a member of parliament. Upcoming briefings are expected to outline the ministry’s recent performance and reform plans.
