Ayo, the official mascot of the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026, was unveiled Friday during a festive ceremony at the Grand Théâtre National de Dakar, Senegal, marking exactly one year until the Games begin.
Ayo is a young lion born in Senegal, known as the Land of Teranga. He symbolizes the joyful and courageous spirit of African youth.
Wearing the Tingandé, a traditional hat of the Fulani people, and holding a West African Djembe drum, Ayo represents pride, unity and momentum.
The unveiling was led by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry.
“We are extremely excited today to be unveiling the mascot, a mascot that has great meaning of happiness and joy,” said Coventry. “It’s a symbol of how young and dynamic our continent is.”
The design of Ayo was created by 16-year-old Ndeye Mariama Diop, who won a national competition launched earlier this year. More than 490 students from across Senegal submitted entries.
“I was inspired by all the cultures of Senegal,” Diop said, adding that she drew from both Fulani traditions and colorful Wolof fashion.
President Faye praised the process of selecting the mascot, saying it reflected “an event carried by youth, built by them and for them.”
He called Ayo “an expression of the artistic talents, ingenuity and creative genius” of Senegal’s students.
The mascot received a warm reception from young people attending the event. “It gives the idea that Africa is a continent of art,” said 13-year-old Adji Penda Dieng.
Andre Ndiaye, 15, said the design “shows that Africa is truly hosting the Olympic Games.”
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will take place from October 31 to November 13 across three locations: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. The event will welcome 2,700 of the world’s top athletes under the age of 18.
