MBABANE, Eswatini (Bantu Gazette)— A new World Bank-financed project is set to accelerate Eswatini’s progress toward universal energy access by 2030, according to a World Bank statement on Friday.
The Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) project aims to provide electricity to 200,000 people, connecting 50,000 new households over the next five years.
“This initiative is about the people of Eswatini, ensuring that every Liswati has access to electricity,” said Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla.
“Eswatini remains committed to universal energy access, as reaffirmed in our endorsement of the Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration at the recent Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit,” Dladla added.
According to the statement, ASCENT Eswatini will use grid and off-grid solutions to expand energy access, particularly in underserved rural areas, unlocking economic opportunities and improving living standards.
The project will also provide technical expertise to enhance energy security, financial sustainability, and planning.
The initiative builds on Eswatini’s existing Network Reinforcement and Access Project and aligns with the country’s Rural Electrification Plan and National Energy Policy 2018.
It represents a 20% increase in electrified households from the 249,014 connected in 2023.
The World Bank has allocated $100 million for the project, including $39 million in concessional funding from the International Development Association (IDA), a $51 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), and a $10 million grant from the Livable Planet Fund.
“The ASCENT Eswatini project deepens the World Bank’s engagement in supporting the country’s development priorities,” said World Bank Country Director Satu Kahkonen.
“Expanding energy access is vital for economic growth, better livelihoods, and improved service delivery,” Kahkonen added.
Eswatini’s Minister of Economic Planning and Development, Thambo Gina, said the initiative would improve living standards and foster economic growth through sustainable and reliable energy access.
