President William Ruto on Monday appointed 22-year-old Truphena Muthoni as an ambassador for Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, recognizing her environmental activism with a national award.

Muthoni received the Head of State Commendation (HSC) Medal after meeting with Ruto at State House on Monday, following her completion of a 72-hour tree-hugging challenge in Nyeri from December 8 to 11.

The effort was aimed at raising awareness about climate change and conservation. Ruto praised her “dedication and determination,” calling her an example of “exemplary service to environmental stewardship.”

The appointment aligns with Kenya’s national reforestation initiative, which targets the planting of 15 billion trees by 2032. According to the government, more than 783 million trees have already been planted under the program.

In addition to the honorary role, Muthoni and her team were awarded a fully sponsored holiday by the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry also pledged support for her planned visit to Brazil to explore global conservation strategies.

“Truphena Muthoni is an exemplary young Kenyan whose dedication and determination embody the very best of our nation’s spirit,” Ruto said in a statement posted on social media.

UNESCO Youth Forum Kenya also acknowledged her achievement, stating in a post on X that her leadership in mental health advocacy, climate action, and youth-led initiatives “continues to influence positive change.”

On Monday, Muthoni held meetings with senior government officials in Nairobi to discuss her new ambassadorial role and ongoing environmental efforts.
