ACCRA, Ghana (BG) — In a historic ceremony in Accra on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as Ghana’s president, marking a new chapter in the country’s democratic journey.

The event, attended by over 20 African leaders, including Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, celebrated Ghana’s political stability and commitment to democratic governance.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was also sworn into office as Ghana’s vice president, making history as the country’s first female vice president.

“With Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang by my side, we are poised to embark on a journey of progress and inclusivity, united in our vision for a more prosperous Ghana,” Mahama said in his inaugural address.

Her groundbreaking ascension is a significant step toward gender equality in Ghanaian politics, breaking barriers and inspiring a new generation of leaders.

Ghana, widely regarded as a beacon of democracy in Africa, has long been celebrated for its peaceful transitions of power and adherence to democratic principles.

President Mahama’s inauguration further solidifies the nation’s reputation as a model for transparent and accountable governance on the continent.

A 24-Hour Economy: Transforming Ghana’s Economic Landscape

President Mahama outlined an ambitious economic vision in his address, pledging to introduce a vibrant 24-hour economy to unlock Ghana’s growth potential.

“Our vision hinges on the introduction and implementation of a 24-hour economy,” Mahama said. “Imagine a Ghana where our markets are alive and bustling at all hours of the day, with responsive public services accessible at all times, such that businesses can operate flexibly to meet the diverse demands that they are subjected to.”

This model, he noted, will bolster job creation, stimulate local industry, and empower citizens to contribute to national progress.

Mahama called on business leaders to support this vision and pledged to rationalize the tax regime to ensure transparency and fairness for investors.

The 24-hour economy plan also embraces diversity and fosters inclusivity, ensuring that all citizens can access opportunities to thrive regardless of background.

Ghana’s Place in a Changing Global Economy

President Mahama acknowledged the shifting dynamics of the global economy, particularly the growing influence of the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

He highlighted the increasing share of global GDP held by BRICS, which reached 37.3% in 2023, surpassing the G7’s 30%.

“There is a seismic shift happening within the system of global economic dominance,” Mahama said. “We must also bear in mind that the affairs of the world can shape, influence, avoid, or even maximize the effect they have on us.”

He emphasized the need for Ghana to strengthen ties with emerging economies while positioning itself as a key player in regional and global markets.

Commitment to Accountability and Inclusivity

Mahama also outlined his administration’s immediate priorities: stabilizing the macroeconomic environment, improving the business climate, pursuing constitutional reforms, and combating corruption.

“This day is particularly special for us and for every Ghanaian who dreams of a society where barriers are shattered and ambitions are realized,” Mahama said, praising Opoku-Agyemang’s historic ascension as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to fostering gender equality.

Looking Ahead

As the sun set over Accra, optimism filled the air. International dignitaries underscored Ghana’s role as a beacon of democracy in Africa, with high expectations for Mahama’s administration to deliver on its economic reform and governance promises.

Mahama’s leadership comes at a critical juncture for Ghana, with his vision of a reset resonating deeply with citizens eager for transformative progress.

“Let today be the dawn of a new era of hope, an era of job creation, an era of accountability, an era of institutional strengthening and resilience, and an era of unparalleled potential for all Ghanaians,” he said.

With faith in Ghana’s potential, Mahama assured Ghanaians of his commitment to building a prosperous and inclusive future.
